Wayne Theoret
After retiring from Bombardier/Canadair Aerospace Division, as Senior Graphic Designer, I decided to express my creative abilities in art through ‘WOOD’.
Having a strong passion for Nature’s Wild Life and Egyptology, I found it only fitting to use wood as a medium.
I wanted to take my art a step beyond and chose exotic wood to best express my ideas. I create my own designs through constant research and work with thirty or more different woods from around the globe, for a variety of color, texture and definition.
During the many exhibitions throughout the year, I take the extra time to educate the general public about the natural beauty in my sculptured designs.
My pieces are unique, really ‘One of a Kind’ - there is no paint or stain - only natural wood, even if several pieces are made from the same layout, using different wood creates a new separate piece.
Once a design is created and drawn, tracings are made of each section and transposed on to selected pieces of wood, until the entire layout is completed. They are then cut with a scroll saw, shaped by machine then sanded. Afterwards, it is hand carved and sanded until each piece is finished and glued together on a choice piece of ¼ birch or maple plywood serving as a background, which is mounted on a support board. A frame and molding is prepared and glued together.
For the finishing, I use multiple coats of either a satin or gloss varnish or a combination of both. Each individual piece is manipulated at least 5 times. Some projects have nearly 200 pieces. Usually, an average layout, say 24" x 24" could take 80/100 hours of labour.
The love of wood, plenty of patience, perserverance and creative ideas are all combined in producing this art - until the very last piece is laid in place.
With regular annual exhibitions, I have also been profiled on the TV Station CJOH - "Regional Contact" in January 2004, which proved to be an excellent introduction in the Ottawa Region.
